Race Report: Tinkerbell Half Marathon Weekend

21.05.2015
|

Once again I was lucky enough to run another exciting runDisney race weekend!  As the official nutritionist for runDisney, it’s one of my perks.  I had to present at a global wellness summit in California earlier in the week, and my new husband John had business out there that week as well, so we decided to meet up after our business was done and head down to Anaheim together–without kids!  We’ve been married for 5 weeks and hadn’t taken a honeymoon, so we justified going to Disneyland without our kids as saying it was our honeymoon […]

What Staying Healthy Means to Me

19.05.2015
|

Eating right and exercising regularly is hard.  Really hard.  Temptations to eat high fat, high sugar, high yum-factor food crosses my path several times a day.  When the alarm goes off way too early to be awake let alone exercising, I don’t always leap out of bed into my exercise gear.

So why do I do it?  Why do I say “no” to Ben and Jerry and “yes” to Tony Horton and Sean T?  One word:  Energy.  When I don’t exercise and eat too much junk, I feel bad.  I feel bad in every dimension.  I’m […]

Fueled by Plants

15.05.2015
|

“Aren’t you tired all the time? Is that safe? How do you have enough energy to work out? So like, where do you get your protein?” If I had a nickel for every time somebody asked me the protein question…I could solve world hunger.

Being vegan, a lot of people openly express their concerns about whether I’m getting enough nutrients. Believe it or not, there is not one nutrient that comes from an animal that you can’t get from plants. They provide us with everything we need and more.

In terms of energy, I have tons […]

Avocados–The Fruit of Diversity

14.05.2015
|

We can all tell from my post a couple weeks ago how much I love avocados, but I only vaguely mentioned the many ways to eat them. My uncharacteristic lack of description hasn’t been sitting well with me, so I decided to visit the magical site of Pinterest and do a little avocado searching to provide some specifics. I put together a list highlighting some awesome ways to use avocados that I have either tried before, or would love to try soon. Enjoy!

National Blood Pressure Month

8.05.2015
|

May is National Blood Pressure Month—a topic that I feel should be addressed. According to the American Heart Association, 80 million adults have high blood pressure in the U.S. That is a ridiculously high number! Having high blood pressure should not be a “common” thing we eventually, inevitably get. It’s extremely risky and dangerous—it’s time to get it together people!

Having high blood pressure increases your chances of having overstretched and injured arterial walls, having a heart attack, stroke, heart failure, kidney failure, peripheral vascular disease, and reduces the supply of oxygen-rich blood to […]

40 and Fabulous

4.05.2015
|

The number doesn’t thrill me, but everything else about being 40 is actually fabulous. I have so much in my life to be thankful for, and I have never felt better.

I turned 40 back in November, and while I can’t say I dreaded it, I wasn’t exactly thrilled. I distinctly remember when my dad turned 40 and the surprise birthday bash my mom sprung on him, and it was mind boggling that I was that old now, too.

The number doesn’t thrill me, but everything else about being 40 is actually fabulous. I have […]

Loaded with healthy fats

Avocados are a great source of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, both of which improve and regulate cell and hormone function and reduce the risk of heart disease.

Increases nutrient absorption from plant based sources

Many antioxidants and vitamins obtained from fruits and veggies are […]

Big Sur Marathon Race Report

28.04.2015
|

Last summer I made the decision to sign up for the Big Sur Full Marathon. I had always had it on my bucket list of marathons, and figured there was no better time than the present to make it a reality.

I went to the Monterey/Carmel/Big Sur area back in the early 90’s when I was a teenager on a Girl Scout Wider Opportunity trip to learn about photography and John Steinbeck. I immediately fell in love way back then with the gorgeous California coast about an hour and a half south of San Francisco. For me […]
