5 Reasons to Love Avocados

Avocados! Where does one even begin to describe such an amazing fruit? This is definitely a staple in my diet and I am so excited that avocado season is officially here! To celebrate, I’ve narrowed down my love for them into 5 reasons (harder than you think).

  1. Loaded with healthy fats

Avocados are a great source of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, both of which improve and regulate cell and hormone function and reduce the risk of heart disease.

  1. Increases nutrient absorption from plant based sources

Many antioxidants and vitamins obtained from fruits and veggies are fat-soluble, which means they need to be eaten with a source of fat to be absorbed. There are many healthy fats out there, but I like avocados in particular (compared to say, an oil) because it is a whole food and our bodies will respond best to it instead of treating it like a foreign substance. Not to mention, avocados go with pretty much everything (which I get to in reason #5)

  1. Has protein and iron

Yes people, there are sources other than animal products that provide protein and iron! Who would’ve thought? 😉  It’s not much, but since it’s hard for us vegans to get enough fat and calories day-to-day we can afford to eat much larger portions of avocados so it definitely adds up!

  1. Creamy and delicious

Can’t leave out the taste factor now can we? Avocados make everything super creamy, velvety, and flavorful…plain and simple.

  1. Versatile

What can’t you do with an avocado?! Seriously, think about it. Smoothies, salads, rice bowls, burritos, dips, toppings, salsas, brownies…the possibilities are endless! If I’m needing a little extra fat and calories in my diet I love to add avocado to my tomato-date dressing to make it extra thick and creamy, or top it on my bean soup. Either way, it’s heavenly.
